September 8 & 9, 2001
The 2001 ROAR Region 10 On Road Fuel Championship was hosted by MARCAR on September 8th & 9th. The weather forecast was correct this year. Unfortunately, it included rain. In the end the weather turned out quite nice - you just wouldn't have predicted it Saturday morning.
Twenty-eight entries were set to do battle in four different classes: 1/8th 4wd, 1/10th 4wd, 1/10th 2wd and .12 Touring. The 1/10th classes had a combined total of five entries so they raced together but were separated for scoring purposes.
Saturday:
We arrived at 7:00 a.m. to start on the track. The skies weren't looking great but we got underway. About 7:15, a few rain drops started falling and, five minutes later, the rain was fairly steady. We headed inside Nigel's motor home to stay dry. Around 8:45, we decided to head over to Perkins to eat breakfast. We were enjoying breakfast but could see out the window and see that there were actually snowflakes falling. Not sticking, but falling. About 10:15 we got back to the motor home and settled down to watch Austin Powers, The Spy Who Shagged Me. We watched about 20 - 25 minutes when we were interrupted by the weather - it had stopped raining. We headed out to finish assembling the track. Then the sky started lightening up and there were actually a few blue patches coming through. By the time we finished the track, the skies were mostly clear but it was still cold. The wind was helping dry the track which then allowed us to blow the dirt/dust off. After blowing off the track, we set about wetting it again - this time with sugar water.
After the track dried, we opened it up for practice. In the meantime, we set up the computer, took entries and started running the cars through tech inspection. Most cars were okay but we had to send a few back to do a couple of adjustments before they would pass.
We held the driver's meeting around 3:40 p.m. We covered all the rules, how the races would be run, etc. and finished about 3:50. At 4:00 p.m., we began the warm-up for the first heat of the first round of qualifying. We managed to finish two rounds of qualifying today by 6:05 p.m.

Sunday:
Sunday morning dawned bright and clear again - and cold. Frost on the top of the driver's stand made it pretty slick. A little rain had fallen during the night so we decided to re-spray the track with sugar water. While that was drying, it was a great time to hold the Best Appearing contest. For the second year in a row, Darren Dill won the Best Appearing contest. Darren has quite the flair for painting RC bodies.
The track was opened up for practice until 9:25. We held another driver's meeting at 9:30 to go over the main event information and started round 3 of qualifying at 9:45. We had a 15 minute break before we started round 4.

We took an hour long break to set up the main events and eat lunch. The main events started around 1:00 p.m. and finished up about 4:15. After the dust settled, we handed out plaques to everyone (literally).
Main event results can be seen here.
That ended two great days (okay, 1 1/2 days) of racing in Region 10. Congratulations to all the new Region 10 On Road Fuel Champions for 2001, they all did a great job:
Darren Dill - 1/10th 4wd
Brandon Baca - 1/10th 2wd
Ken Souther - .12 Touring
Sal DiFazio - 1/8th
4wd
Until next year….
